Working with user profiles

A user profile is a set of files that Dragon uses to process what you say. Your user profile stores information, like the type of microphone you use, custom words, and vocabularies.

To upgrade your user profile:

If you upgraded automatically, Dragon upgrades your user profiles the first time you open them after upgrading Dragon. If you chose not to upgrade your profiles, you can upgrade them later by selecting Dragon>Dragon Tools>Upgrade User Profiles (Windows 7) or Dragon>Upgrade User Profiles (Windows 8.1 and 10) from the Windows Start menu.

To create a new user profile:

  1. On the Welcome screen, click Next.
  2. Run through the wizard.

Or

To create a new user profile for a different language:

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is disabled (Standalone mode), you must create one user profile for each language and region in which you want to dictate. Follow the instructions above to create a new user profile.

You must have selected the languages you want to use for your user profiles during the Dragon installation. You can install the languages later from the Dragon installation CD or setup.exe file.

To open a different user profile:

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is enabled, you have a single user profile for each region. You can open user profiles for other regions or languages by selecting a different language for your user profile. To select a different language, see To select a different language above.

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is disabled (Standalone mode) and you have multiple user profiles, do the following to open a different one:

  1. From the DragonBar, select Profile>Open User Profile.

    The Open User Profile dialog box opens.

  2. Select a user profile.
  3. Optionally select the Load this profile when Dragon starts option. This profile becomes your default user profile

  4. Click Open.

    Dragon closes your current user profile and opens the new one.

To select a default user profile:

Your default user profiles open automatically when you open Dragon.

If you have multiple user profiles and you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is disabled (Standalone mode), do the following:

  1. From the DragonBar, select one of the following:

    • Profile>Open User Profile
    • Profile>Manage User Profiles

    The Open User Profile or Manage User Profiles dialog box opens.

  2. Select a user profile.
  3. Select the Load this profile when Dragon starts check box.

  4. Close the dialog box.

If you have multiple regions and you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is enabled, do the following:

To close your user profile:

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is enabled, your user profile closes automatically when you log out of Dragon or exit Dragon.

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is disabled (Standalone mode), your user profile closes automatically when you exit Dragon. You can also do the following to close your user profile at any time:

From the DragonBar, select Profile>Close User Profile.

To delete a user profile:

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is enabled, you cannot delete your user profile. If necessary, you can reset it. See To reset your user profile.

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is disabled (Standalone mode) and you have only one user profile, you cannot delete it when it is open. You must first close your user profile. See To close your user profile.

Do the following to delete your user profile:

  1. From the DragonBar, select Profile>Manage User Profiles.

    The Manage User Profiles dialog box opens.

  2. Select a user profile.

    You cannot delete the current user profile. To delete it, you must first open a different user profile.

  3. Click Delete.
  4. Click Yes.

To rename a user profile:

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is enabled, you cannot rename user profiles.

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is disabled (Standalone mode) and you have only one user profile, you cannot rename it when it is open. You must first close your user profile. See To close your user profile.

Do the following to rename your user profile:

  1. From the DragonBar, select Profile>Manage User Profiles.

    The Manage User Profiles dialog box opens.

  2. Select a user profile.

    You cannot rename the current user profile. To rename it, you must first open a different user profile.

  3. Click Rename.

    The Rename User Profile dialog box opens.

  4. Specify a new name, and then click OK.

To save your user profile:

Dragon saves your user profile automatically when you exit. You might save your user profile manually if, for example, you just added many new words to your vocabulary.

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is enabled, do the following to save your user profile:

From the DragonBar, select Profile>Save.

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is disabled (Standalone mode), do the following to save your user profile:

From the DragonBar, select Profile>Save User Profile.

To view user profile properties:

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is enabled, user profile properties are unavailable.

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is disabled (Standalone mode), do the following to view your user profile properties:

  1. From the DragonBar, select one of the following:

    • Profile>Manage User Profiles
    • Profile>Open User Profile

    The Manage User Profiles dialog box or the Open User Profile dialog box opens.

  2. Select a user profile.
  3. Click Properties.

    The User Profile Properties dialog box opens.

To add a vocabulary to your user profile:

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is enabled, see Working with vocabularies for instructions on creating a new vocabulary. When you next log in to Dragon, a prompt appears, allowing you to select a vocabulary for your user profile.

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is disabled (Standalone mode), do one of the following to add a vocabulary to your user profile:

  1. From the DragonBar, select Profile>Add vocabulary to the current User Profile.

    The New Vocabulary dialog box opens.

  2. Specify a vocabulary name, vocabulary on which it should be based, and a region.

    For more information, click Help.

  3. Click OK

Or

  1. From the DragonBar, select Tools>Vocabulary Center>Manage Vocabularies.

    The Manage Vocabularies dialog box opens.

  2. Click New.

    The New Vocabulary dialog box opens.

  3. Specify the following:

    • Vocabulary name
    • Vocabulary on which the new vocabulary should be based on
    • Region

    For field descriptions, click Help.

  4. Click OK.

To back up your user profile automatically:

  1. From the DragonBar, select Tools>Options.

    The Options dialog box opens.

  2. Click the Data page.
  3. Specify a value for the Automatically back up user profile every n saves option.

    Automatic user profile backups occur every 5 saves by default.

To back up your user profile manually:

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is enabled, export your user profile to back it up manually. See the To export your user profile section.

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is disabled (Standalone mode), do one of the following to back up your user profile manually:

From the DragonBar, select Profile>Backup User Profile.

Or

  1. From the DragonBar, select Profile>Manage User Profiles.

    The Manage User Profiles dialog box opens.

  2. Select Advanced>Backup.

To restore your user profile:

You might restore your user profile if you accidentally saved changes to your user profile that you didn't want, or if your user profile became corrupted.

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is disabled (Standalone mode), do the following to restore your user profile:

  1. From the DragonBar, select one of the following:

    • Profile>Restore User Profile
    • Profile>Manage User Profiles>Advanced>Restore

    The Close User Profile to Proceed dialog box opens.

  2. Click Proceed.

    Dragon closes your user profile and the Profile Restore dialog box opens.

  3. Select a backup.
  4. Click Restore.

    The Profile Restore dialog box opens.

  5. Click Yes.

    Dragon restores your profile.

  6. Click OK.

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is enabled, you can do one of the following to restore your user profile:

To export your user profile:

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is enabled, you can do the following to export your user profile:

Or

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is disabled (Standalone mode), you can do the following to export your user profile:

  1. From the DragonBar, select Profile>Manage User Profiles.

    The Manage User Profiles dialog box opens.

  2. Select a user profile.
  3. Select Advanced>Export.

    The Browse for Folder dialog box opens.

  4. Navigate to the folder to which you want to export your user profile.
  5. Click OK.

    The export process begins.

  6. When the process finishes, click OK.
  7. Click Close.

To import your user profile:

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is disabled (Standalone mode), do the following to import your profile:

  1. From the DragonBar, select Profile>Manage User Profiles.

    The Manage User Profiles dialog box opens.

  2. Select Advanced>Import.

    The Browse for Folder dialog box opens.

  3. Navigate to the folder to which you exported your user profile.
  4. Click OK.

    The import process begins.

  5. When the process finishes, click OK.
  6. Click Close.

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is enabled, do the following to import your profile:

  1. From the DragonBar, select Profile>Import.

    The Browse For Folder dialog box opens.

  2. Navigate to the folder to which you exported your user profile.
  3. Click OK.

    The import process begins.

  4. When the process finishes, click OK.
