Nuance Unveils Voice Control Healthcare Edition

Nuance Teams with Sprint, MEDITECH to Give Physicians Mobile Access to Hospital Information Systems; Solution Demonstrated at HIMSS 2007

HIMSS 2007 – NEW ORLEANS, February 26, 2007 – Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN), a leading provider of speech and imaging solutions, today unveiled a breakthrough speech technology to deliver mobile access to hospital information systems. Voice Control Healthcare Edition delivers immediate access to remote healthcare information from smartphones and handheld devices. Voice Control Healthcare Edition marks the first vertically focused technology of Nuance Voice Control, a mobile search and messaging service that has surpassed one million transactions in consumer markets.

Voice Control Healthcare Edition, currently being developed with Sprint (NYSE: S), allows providers to instantly access clinical information from their existing healthcare information system via a Sprint handheld device using simple voice commands. The user simply dictates an information request, and the resulting data is conveniently displayed on the smartphone screen, eliminating the need to locate a computer terminal in the hospital or healthcare facility to obtain important patient information. For providers on the move, this solution represents a dramatic productivity boost and can have a meaningful impact on the quality of patient care.

MEDITECH Inc., a leader in enterprise Healthcare IT systems, will be demonstrating Voice Control Healthcare Edition in the Dictaphone (a division of Nuance) booth (Booth #4120) and also in the MEDITECH booth (Booth #310) at the 2007 HIMSS Annual Conference, taking place this week in New Orleans, La.

Voice Control Healthcare Edition includes three distinct capabilities:

  • Lab Results: Providers can simply press a button on their device and say “Lab results for Mary Jones,” and have the desired information instantly appear on the screen of their mobile device.

  • Medications: Providers press a button on their device and say “Medications for Mary Jones,” and have the medication and allergy information instantly appear on the screen of their mobile device.

  • Patient Lists: With the press of a button on their device and saying the words, “Patient List,” providers can have their complete patient listing appear on the screen of their mobile device.

Nuance will continue to work with its healthcare IT partners to add new features and capabilities to Voice Control Healthcare Edition. For example, development has already begun on speech-based electronic prescriptions, helping to eliminate the harm caused by incorrect prescriptions, which injure approximately 1.5 million Americans each year. More than 7,000 people are killed each year in the U.S. due to prescription errors. Nuance will work with partners to provide mobile voice access to prescription writing modules within healthcare IT systems, thus helping to eliminate common errors associated with handwritten prescriptions – including wrong drugs sold because a pharmacist can't read a physician’s writing. This initiative further supports Nuance’s goal to provide solutions that simultaneously improve provider efficiency and the quality of patient care.

“Through our work with partners such as Sprint and MEDITECH, today Nuance is delivering speech-powered healthcare information technology that help hospitals, clinics and other provider organizations streamline operations, reduce costs and most importantly, improve the quality of patient care,” said Michael Thompson, vice president, telco, search and communication, Nuance. “Nuance mobile technologies represent a significant strategic investment area for the company in consumer markets as well as key vertical markets. We are pleased that our first vertical mobile offering is in healthcare, where Nuance enjoys a strong leadership position today.”
